1998-2011 Yamaha V Star 650: Dry rear splines on the shaft drive

What goes wrong
Shaft drive gets sold as maintenance-free, and that assumption destroys these bikes. The rear wheel splines run dry and depend entirely on a heavy coat of moly paste. Neglected, the splines turn to red dust and take the final drive with them.
NHTSA's recall index does not recognise the model string "V Star 650" , which happens constantly with motorcycles, because recalls are often filed under a model code rather than the marketing name. That is not the same as "no recalls."
Look this VIN up directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you assume it is clear.
What to do about it
On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
