What goes wrong

The epoxy holding the flywheel rotor magnets degrades and centrifugal force throws them outward. Yamaha never recalled it, they quietly superseded the part number in 2009 with a rotor that sleeves the magnets. A silent update is still an admission, but it means there's no free repair and no campaign number to check.

A note on the federal record for this bike
NHTSA's recall index does not recognise the model string "FZ8-N" , which happens constantly with motorcycles, because recalls are often filed under a model code rather than the marketing name. That is not the same as "no recalls."
Look this VIN up directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you assume it is clear.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Assume this is coming if it hasn't happened, and treat an updated OEM or aftermarket rotor as an acquisition cost. Ask whether it's been done and for the receipt. Listen for grinding or knocking from the left case.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
