2006-2020 Yamaha FJR1300: Ground joint recall 11V338000 + 2016-2020 gearbox issue

KNOWN MAJOR RISK

EVIDENCE: FEDERAL RECORD

What goes wrong

NHTSA recall 11V338000 (verified) covers 2006-2009 FJR1300s for a ground joint connector that overheats under the electrical load of touring accessories, causing stalling, dangerous on a heavy bike at speed. Separately, the six-speed introduced for 2016-2020 put stress concentrations on the second gear pinion, and that repair requires splitting the engine.

Federal record for the 2013 Yamaha FJR1300, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
1 owner complaint , most-reported: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (1) · 1 recall listed.
Motorcycle complaint volume is a tiny fraction of what cars generate, so a low number here proves very little. NHTSA does not crash-test motorcycles at all.
Rough cost: Gearbox repair splits the engine, a 16-hour job. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: For a 2006-2009, verify recall completion by VIN. For a 2016-2020, demand explicit dealership receipts proving the gearbox procedure was completed, a 16-hour engine-split is not something you take on faith.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
