2000-2012 Subaru Outback: EJ25 head gaskets

CHECK IT CLOSE
specific things to inspect and negotiate

What goes wrong

The classic Subaru head gasket era, the single-layer gaskets degrade and leak externally first, overheat later. Subaru’s own coolant-conditioner campaign acknowledged it; the real fix is updated gaskets.

Federal record for the 2006 Subaru Outback, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
280 owner complaints on file , most-reported: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (71) · AIR BAGS (37) · ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (34).
7 safety recalls listed.
Complaint volume tracks how many were sold as well as how they held up , read it as a pattern, not a score. Counts change; confirm live at nhtsa.gov or by running the free check below.
Rough cost: $1,800-$2,800 with timing service. Broad estimates , labor rates and parts vary widely by region and shop.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Look for oil/coolant weep at the head seams, both sides. If it’s been done with proof (ideally with MLS gaskets), that’s a plus, not a minus.

Whatever you find, a $100-150 pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the cheapest money you’ll spend on any used car , including this one.
