What goes wrong

The factory radiator’s internal transmission cooler cracks and lets coolant into the automatic transmission, owners call the pink result the “strawberry milkshake of death.” Nissan extended warranties over it; those are long expired. One of the best-documented failure patterns of the era.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Pull the transmission dipstick: pink, milky, or strawberry-colored fluid = walk, the transmission is already dying. Ask if the radiator was replaced or a bypass installed, proof of that fix is a genuine plus.

Whatever you find, a $100-150 pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the cheapest money you’ll spend on any used car , including this one.
