2011-2016 Hyundai Elantra: 1.8 Nu engine piston scuffing

KNOWN MAJOR RISK
known major failure pattern on this model

What goes wrong

The 1.8 Nu engine has a documented piston-slap defect, pistons scuff the cylinder walls, the engine ticks like a sewing machine, burns oil, and eventually dies. A class-action settlement extended coverage on many VINs, with strings attached (documented oil changes, cold-weather-state rules).

Federal record for the 2014 Hyundai Elantra, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
382 owner complaints on file , most-reported: ENGINE (105) · SERVICE BRAKES (63) · ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (41).
2 safety recalls listed.
Complaint volume tracks how many were sold as well as how they held up , read it as a pattern, not a score. Counts change; confirm live at nhtsa.gov or by running the free check below.
Rough cost: $3,500-$5,500 short block when it goes. Broad estimates , labor rates and parts vary widely by region and shop.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Stone-cold start: a loud metallic ticking that speeds up with RPM and only partly fades warm = the defect. Heavy black soot at the tailpipe seconds it. Check settlement coverage on the VIN before assuming it’s funded.

Whatever you find, a $100-150 pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the cheapest money you’ll spend on any used car , including this one.
