2012-2015 Honda NC700X: Starter relay failure

CHECK IT CLOSE

EVIDENCE: REPAIR-INDUSTRY CONSENSUS

What goes wrong

A waterproofing sealant migrated between the copper contacts in the starter relay and acted as an insulator, arcing and compromising the 30-amp main circuit. A supplier defect rather than a design flaw, the NC platform's engine is otherwise close to bulletproof.

Federal record for the 2014 Honda NC700X, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
4 owner complaints , most-reported: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (3) · VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL (1) · 1 recall listed.
Motorcycle complaint volume is a tiny fraction of what cars generate, so a low number here proves very little. NHTSA does not crash-test motorcycles at all.
Rough cost: Relay replacement, permanently fixes it. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Hit the starter several times, including after the bike is hot. Intermittent no-crank with a good battery points straight at the relay. Cheap fix, permanent.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
