What goes wrong

NHTSA recall 05V027000 (verified: "certain frame welds do not meet manufacturing specifications") covers early GL1800s. Robotic welding on the aluminum spar frame left cold, shallow welds that crack under the load of a 900-pound bike hitting potholes. The remedy is invasive, strip the bike and weld reinforcement gussets on.

A note on the federal record for this bike
NHTSA's recall index does not recognise the model string "Gold Wing" , which happens constantly with motorcycles, because recalls are often filed under a model code rather than the marketing name. That is not the same as "no recalls."
