2006-2009 Honda Civic: R18 engine block cracking history

CHECK IT CLOSE
specific things to inspect and negotiate

What goes wrong

This generation’s 1.8 had a documented engine-block casting flaw, coolant leaks from a cracked block. Honda extended warranties to 10 years and replaced many; survivors today either got a new block (good) or beat the odds (verify).

Federal record for the 2008 Honda Civic, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
916 owner complaints on file , most-reported: AIR BAGS (168) · ENGINE (132) · VISIBILITY (108).
7 safety recalls listed.
Complaint volume tracks how many were sold as well as how they held up , read it as a pattern, not a score. Counts change; confirm live at nhtsa.gov or by running the free check below.
Rough cost: $0 if already replaced · $2,500+ if an original block cracks. Broad estimates , labor rates and parts vary widely by region and shop.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Check the coolant reservoir and look for dried coolant trails on the engine block, especially near the exhaust side. Ask directly if the block was ever replaced under the extension.

Whatever you find, a $100-150 pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the cheapest money you’ll spend on any used car , including this one.
