What goes wrong

The automatic cam chain tensioner loses spring tension after years of heat cycling and stops holding the timing chain tight. You get a metallic marbles-in-a-can rattle from the right side of the engine, loudest on cold start and again between 4,000 and 6,000 RPM. Left alone long enough the chain can jump a tooth and the valves meet the pistons.

What to do about it
