2008-2015 Honda CBR1000RR: SC59 oil consumption + stator burnout

KNOWN MAJOR RISK

EVIDENCE: MANUFACTURER / LEGAL RECORD

What goes wrong

Low-tension piston rings on the SC59 generation don't scrape the cylinder walls properly. Consumption can reach a quart every 1,000 miles, and an engine run low on oil spins rod bearings. Honda extended the warranty on 2008-2011 bikes to cover piston ring replacement, which tells you how real it was. The stator on the same platform burns out from poor cooling over the generator cover.

Federal record for the 2012 Honda CBR1000RR, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
0 owner complaints · 1 recall listed.
Motorcycle complaint volume is a tiny fraction of what cars generate, so a low number here proves very little. NHTSA does not crash-test motorcycles at all.
Rough cost: $2,500-$4,000 engine-out for rings and re-hone; $400-$600 for the stator. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Check the dipstick and the exhaust tip, bluish smoke under hard acceleration or on deceleration, soot in the can. Ask directly how much oil it uses between changes and get a number, not a shrug. Put a multimeter across the battery at 5,000 RPM: below 12.5V means the charging system is going.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
