2015-2016 Honda CB300F: Crankshaft machining defect, recall 16V528000

KNOWN MAJOR RISK

EVIDENCE: FEDERAL RECORD

What goes wrong

NHTSA recall 16V528000 (verified) covers 2015-2016 CBR300R, CBR300RA and CB300F for a crankshaft machining error. The flawed machining loads the bearing retainer until the plating fails; when the retainer breaks the connecting rod loses its geometry and the engine locks up. On a bike this size the repair costs more than the machine.

Federal record for the 2016 Honda CB300F, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
3 owner complaints , most-reported: ENGINE (2) · ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (1) · 1 recall listed.
Motorcycle complaint volume is a tiny fraction of what cars generate, so a low number here proves very little. NHTSA does not crash-test motorcycles at all.
Rough cost: Engine-out replacement, routinely more than the bike is worth. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: This one is binary. Get the VIN and check recall completion at nhtsa.gov before anything else. Unrepaired, walk away regardless of how clean it looks or how good the price is. The older CBR250R does not share this defect.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
