What goes wrong

The OEM paper and early rubber gaskets on the Evolution Sportster shear and degrade under thermal cycling. Harley service bulletin M-1043 (May 1994) documented the factory defect. You get oil weeping from the top of the engine and hot oil blowing back onto the rider. Harley moved to a better material in 2004.

A note on the federal record for this bike
NHTSA's recall index does not recognise the model string "XL883C" , which happens constantly with motorcycles, because recalls are often filed under a model code rather than the marketing name. That is not the same as "no recalls."
Look this VIN up directly at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you assume it is clear.
Rough cost: $300-$550 for rocker gaskets; $800-$1,200 if the base gaskets go. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Look for oil weeping at the top of the block and caked oil and dirt on the right-side cases. Messy rather than fatal, but price the top-end work in, it's a real teardown.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
