2013-2015 BMW R 1200 GS: Liquid-cooled boxer stator burnout

KNOWN MAJOR RISK

EVIDENCE: MANUFACTURER / LEGAL RECORD

What goes wrong

Early liquid-cooled boxers burn out the alternator stator from excessive thermal load and inadequate cooling over an unvented flywheel. BMW superseded the 11-winding stator with a 13-winding unit and redesigned the rotor, a documented part supersession rather than a recall, so there is no free repair.

Federal record for the 2014 BMW R 1200 GS, pulled from NHTSA when this page was built:
9 owner complaints , most-reported: POWER TRAIN (3) · FUEL SYSTEM (1) · STRUCTURE (1) · 1 recall listed.
Motorcycle complaint volume is a tiny fraction of what cars generate, so a low number here proves very little. NHTSA does not crash-test motorcycles at all.
Rough cost: $2,500-$3,500, engine-out, split-case, stator alone around $1,280. Broad estimates , motorcycle labor rates and parts vary widely.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Watch the TFT for the red triangle and battery icon, and check system voltage while running, below 12.5V means it's going. Do not buy one of these years without documented proof the updated stator was installed.

On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
