Early liquid-cooled boxers burn out the alternator stator from excessive thermal load and inadequate cooling over an unvented flywheel. BMW superseded the 11-winding stator with a 13-winding unit and redesigned the rotor, a documented part supersession rather than a recall, so there is no free repair.
On any used motorcycle, check the tire DOT date codes, ask for the valve service receipt, and look for drop damage on both sides before you talk about price.
