2016-2022 BMW 340i: B58 oil filter housing leak point

CHECK IT CLOSE
specific things to inspect and negotiate

What goes wrong

The B58 six is genuinely one of the best modern engines, with one known habit: the plastic oil filter housing warps and leaks with heat cycles.

Rough cost: $600-$1,200 housing/gasket job. Broad estimates , labor rates and parts vary widely by region and shop.

What to do about it

Before you hand over cash: Flashlight down the front of the engine: oil weep trailing from the filter housing = the known job. Otherwise these are strong buys by BMW standards.

Whatever you find, a $100-150 pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic is the cheapest money you’ll spend on any used car , including this one.
